A few of my favorite photography spots in Taranaki
Choosing what to wear for your photo session can feel a bit overwhelming, you want to look your best, feel comfortable, and make sure your outfit works well on camera.
The good news is, it doesn’t have to be stressful!
I’ve put together some simple tips and tricks to help you choose outfits that flatter you, suit the location, and create timeless images you’ll love for years to come.
01. LAKE ROTOMANU (EAST END POINT)
Lake Rotomanu is such a versatile spot and my current go to for photos. In the evenings, the light gets all warm and golden, which makes everything look extra dreamy. It’s easy to get to, there’s loads of space to wander, and you get a nice mix of beach views and lush backgrounds. This means you get a lot of variety in your gallery without having to go very far.
02. MEETING OF THE WATERS (BURGESS PARK)
There are plenty of little pockets to explore from open grassy areas to shady spots under the trees. It’s a great setting for relaxed, natural photos, whether you’re after a casual family vibe or something a bit more styled. On sunny days, the light streams through the trees in soft patterns, adding depth and warmth to the background without overpowering the shot.
03. PUKEKURA PARK
Pukekura Park is one of those spots that never gets old and is unique to new Plymouth. With its mix of gardens, lakes, and tree-lined paths, there’s always something interesting to shoot. You’ve got open areas for wider shots, quiet nooks for more intimate photos, and features like bridges and waterfalls that add variety without feeling staged. The park works in any season spring blooms, summer greens, or autumn colours and the soft, natural light filtering through the trees makes it easy to get beautiful, relaxed shots.
04. LUCYS GULLY
Lucys Gully is a hidden gem with a really peaceful, forested vibe. The trails wind through tall trees, ferns, and patches of sunlight, giving you a lot of options for different types of shots. It’s great for capturing natural, relaxed photos, whether you’re doing portraits or just documenting a stroll through the bush. The mix of shaded areas and soft light makes it easy to get flattering, moody images without any extra setup, and it feels like a world away from the busier spots.
05. PRIVATE RURAL LOCATIONS
Some of my favourite shots come from private rural spots — those quiet, open spaces that have personal meaning or just the perfect backdrop. Whether it’s a family property, a hidden paddock, or a corner of farmland with rolling hills, these locations let you choose exactly the vibe you want. I love helping clients pick the best spot at their special places, so the photos feel personal and unique. The natural light, wide-open skies, and peaceful surroundings make for relaxed, timeless images that really stand out.
